Why do American black celebrities say this all the time?

american celebrities
Johnny S. asked:

I’ve noticed in watching American TV that black celebrities often say “you know” all the time. Such as.

I go to the “you know” store and “you know” by the “you know” blank dvds so I can “you know” tape the “you know” ball game while I’m “you know” on vacation to “you know” Vermont.

It’s mostly rap stars and ball players who say it.

Why do we hear it so much?

Why do white people say “like” after every word?

  3. Celeste Says:

It’s not just blacks. Listen more closely. It’s anyone under 30.

I’m a white mom and I say it too, you know! I think it is just slang and if you hear it enough like any other slang your gonna pick it up and you it also.

They want To make sure That YOU know LOLZ….

  6. davidis99 Says:

For the same reason you hear many teenagers use th phrase “it’s like” - it’s part of their conversational style. If their english teachers had taken off points for using those phrases during secondary school, they might not be used as much.

  7. TargetMan Says:

It isnt a race thing it is an age thing I hear it from a LOT of teenagers kind of like in the 80’s the valley girl talk

  8. cz73k Says:

It’s the same as people saying ‘um’ or ‘like’.. it’s a way to um fill up the silence when their like you know, trying to think of something to like say

If you’ve the chance to travel to different states then you will learn peoples’ dialog. Also Eminem talks like that too so he could stay in the music contract label ( which is own by black people).

  10. ashley Says:

because they are ghetto and that’s how ghetto ppl talk… duh.

  11. Blue Says:

its a filler, sounds better than when Bush says laws and “uh, uh” stuff and “uh uh” . . . its like eating a snickers bar. Need a time out? Chew it over . .. you try speaking in public w/o needing a second :)

Why do white people say “like” between every other word?
Well it’s not just white people, it’s every one. I guess it doesn’t really has to do with color, it’s just the a way people are used to talking. I also think you’re a bit over exaggerating.

  13. rhemasonador Says:

That’s mostly a New England phrase and it is not new.

When I was growing up in Jersey there were these wise guys you know, the kind of guys you didn’t want to double cross in any way you know because if you did then, you know they would have to send their boyz over to, you know, do a number on ya.

Mostly revived old school ganster talk adopted by rap artist who romanticize the old school mafia types, you know what I mean.

  14. ??Mariam B?? Says:

Its said not just by blacks but by whites also. Many ball players and rap stars say it because most don’t speak correct English and their used to saying the slang from where they grew up.

  15. Brianna M Says:

Really its not that they mean to say it its an act of habit. Many rap stars and ball players who say it grew up in rough neighborhoods, but not even that they just here people they hang with or relatives say it. It becomes natural in their vocabulary so we hear it alot.

  19. Miss Bouvier Says:

Actually, everyone says it. My best friend is white and in no way a rapper, and I’ve never come across anyone who uses it more frequently. Not to mention “d’you know what I mean?”.

  20. November Girl Says:

hell we all say it, just like we all so “like” a lot or “um” or “erm” or something. It’s how we gather out thoughts in conversations

  21. Sands Says:

Why do you care? White girls say “like” all the time. I noticed it but as far as I’m concerned it’s irrelevant. The different races have different cultures and language is a major aspect of that. If you’re that interested, take Linguistics and Sociology courses. They’ll educate you on the fact that people are different.

why do white american celebs say the word “like” all the time.

  23. Qwerty Says:

Dude, you totally set yourself up for this one.

“You know” is a set of filler words, no different from “it was like,” “like,” “uhm,” “so, like” which are often used by young people. I wonder how you managed to overlook that.

  24. onyx1 Says:

Why are you listining for it so much? I hear it too, but from people in general, not just black people, you know what I’m saying. Kissimme has the right avatar, she is an a**.

  25. Dre D Says:

The fact that you don’t recognize how common this is among people is laughable and naive at the same time. If I were you I would be cautious when revealing ~new~ observations to people. lol
